Parque Nacional

Bernardo O'Higgins

The Bernardo O’Higgins National Park is the most extensive in Chile and is shared by the Aysén and Magallanes regions. It has just over 3,525,000 hectares. From Route 7 or Austral Route you can visit the park from the towns of Tortel and Villa O’Higgins, the south of the park can be visited from Puerto Natales and from Puerto Eden. Its icon is the Pio XI glacier, the largest in the southern hemisphere and the only one that is not in retreat in the area. The park includes a large part of the southern ice field that corresponds to Chile. A total of 49 glaciers emerge from the southern ice field, of which 2 are the easiest to visit: the O’Higgins glacier from the town of Villa O’Higgins and the Montt glacier from Tortel, both can only be reached by sailing by sea to Montt and by lake to O’Higgins. To visit Pio XI it is necessary to hire a boat as a charter either from Tortel or from Puerto Eden. Mount San Lorenzo is the second highest peak in Patagonia, which can be accessed from Cochrane, it is north of the park but not included in it.
