Parque Nacional

Cerro Castillo

The Cerro Castillo National Reserve was created in 1970 and then in 2018 it was designated as a National Park. It has an area of more than 138,000 hectares and its untamed nature accounts for the natural, geological and volcanological changes that this region has experienced for centuries. The park was created for the protection of flora and fauna, especially the huemul, which can already be easily seen from various points in the park. The forest is mainly deciduous and in autumn it is stained with extraordinary colours. The highest summit of the mountain range is the Cerro Castillo of 2,318 meters and the first ascent was in 1966 by the Chileans Gastón Oyarzun, Osvaldo Latorre, Antonio Marcel and Raúl Aguilera from the Camp “Neo Zelandés” along the west wall. From the Villa Castillo sector there are several trails, however the main one is “Las Horquetas” which has an approximate length of 51 kms and links Route 7 to Villa Castillo. It must be done in two or three days - with a guide.
