Parque Nacional

Jeinimeni

The Jeinimeni Lake National Reserve, to the south east of the city of Chile Chico, covers an area of 161,100 hectares and was disengaged from its reserve status to be integrated into Patagonia Park in 2018. In 1894, the Welsh explorer Llwyd a Iwan together with the Tehuelche chief Kankel, baptized the river and the lagoon with the name of Gunumunu, which ended in Jeinimeni, which means: “Lake Gego is there or is that”. The main landmarks in this area are: 1) Lake Jeinimeni that stands out for the turquoise colour of its waters, 2) The Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands) of the Pedregoso river with vestiges of ancient nomadic hunter-gatherer peoples, which today are recognized as the Tehuelche ethnic group, 3) The Piedra Clavada (Nailed Stone) of approximately 40 meters high, that has been shaped by the prevailing wind in the steppe sector. 4) The Valle Lunar (Lunar Valley): this sector is characterized by its earth-coloured and reddish tones rock formations The great attraction of this area is its geography with steep slopes mountains, valleys, rivers, streams, rock formations and glaciers, lakes and lagoons with turquoise waters that contrast with the green of the forest and the reddish brown of the mountains. The Jeinimeni area connects with the Valle Chacabuco sector of Patagonia Park by a path that follows the old cattle tracks. The trail crosses the Chacabuco range using the Jeinimeni, the Gloria and Avilés river basins.
